TOPSHAM — Robert H. Owermohle Sr., 79, died Feb. 11 after a long illness.

Owermohle was born Aug. 9, 1932, in Palisades Park, N.J. He graduated from St. Cecilia’s High School in Englewood, N.J., in 1950 and began working for New York Bell Telephone as a cable splicer. He served in the U.S. Army as a communications specialist form 1950 to 1953.

On Jan. 24, 1953, Owermohle married Kathleen Frances Wynn; they were married 59 years before his death.

After his military service was complete he returned to his job at New York Bell Telephone, rising to managerial positions before leaving to establish his own telecommunications manufacturer’s representative and consulting firm, Robert H. Owermohle Inc. The firm which he started 42 years ago continues to prosper under the leadership of his oldest son, Robert Jr.

He and Kathleen moved their family from Bergen County, N.J., to the Pocono Mountain region of Pennsylvania in 1971.

In addition to running his own business, Owermohle made time for community involvement. While living in New Jersey he was an active member of the Lions Club and the volunteer fire department. After moving to Pennsylvania he was active in the Notre Dame High School Parent-Teacher Organization and Hemlock Farms Volunteer Ambulance Service.

Owermohle and his wife maintained residences in both Stroudsburg, Pa., and Manahawkin, N.J., until moving to Highland Green in Topsham in 2006. Once he moved to Maine, Owermohle never “officially” retired, providing business advice and counsel to his son up until his very last weeks.

He was a dedicated family man, always making his family a top priority. His children were his pride and joy throughout his life and the pride he felt for them was only exceeded by his pride in his nine grandchildren. He worked hard in his early career in order to provide for his family.

He was predeceased by his parents and three of his children Kristine Frances, Peter Richard and Elizabeth Kristine Owermohle.

Owermohle is survived by his wife, Kathleen Frances Owermohle; sons Robert H. Owermohle Jr. and his wife, Lyn, and their children Devin, Corin and Madalyn of Sylorsburg, Pa., and Kurt S. Owermohle and his wife, Elizabeth, and their children Stephen, Sarah and Gabrielle of Dumfries, Va.; daughter, Ellen T. Purpura and her husband, Timothy, and their children Andrew, Kathleen and Lindsey of Yarmouth; brothers-in-law James H. Wynne of Dataw, S.C., Donald Wynne of Manahawkin, N.J., and Edward Wynne of Cranberry Lakes, N.J.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His family would like to thank the Community Health and Nursing Service Hospice Care team for its compassionate care and support.

Memorial service arrangements will be released at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to CHANS, 60 Baribeau Drive, Brunswick, ME 04011.
