SOUTH PORTLAND — Robert F. Richard, 87, died Nov. 11. He was born in Lynn, Mass., on Aug. 31, 1925, the son of Edmund Roy and Annie J. Hopkins Richard.  

Richard attended the Lynn schools. In July 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard several ships and at the U.S. Naval School Command in Treasure Island, Calif. He also served as a radar instructor at the Naval Reserve Training Center in South Portland.

He received many honors during his naval career, including the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with eight battle stars, the Philippine Liberation Medal with two battle stars, four Good Conduct Medals and the Purple Heart.

He retired from the Navy in 1965. Later, Richard worked for the Portland Water District.

He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 832, American Legion Post 57 and the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 344, where he also served as the president and secretary for many years.

Richard was married to Ann Richard for 48 years before she predeased him on May 5, 2004. He was also predeceased by his parents and three brothers, Darryl, Hughie and Donald. 

He is survived by his wife of two years, Anna Roberts Richard; his son, Mason Richard, and his wife, Sandra; brother David Richard; and several nephews.

Visiting hours were held Nov. 14 at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland, with a funeral on Nov. 15 at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Interment followed in Calvary Cemetery.
