TOPSHAM — Robert A. Johnson, 78, died May 11 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.   

He was born on Feb. 13, 1932, in Kansas City, Kan., a son of Charles F. and Mary L. Freese Johnson and attended local schools.

In 1953 he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Philippines, where he married his wife, Carrie S. Alcala, on Dec. 8, 1956.

In 1973 he and his family moved to Brunswick, and later moved to Topsham.

After he retired from the Navy in 1975, he worked at Bowdoin College for 20 years.
 
He loved building model trains and maintained a large collection over the years.

His other hobbies included fishing, boating, collecting postcards, stamps and coins, and traveling.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, especially taking them to train shows, and he loved animals.
 
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Carrie of Topsham; four children, Mary Ann Green of Topsham, Joseph A. Johnson of Bowdoinham, Patricia A. Wilson of England, and K. Andrew  Johnson of Topsham; a sister, Virginia Aceves of California, and a brother, William Johnson of Missouri; and seven grandchildren, Iain, Sam, Davina, Eric, Becca, Maggie, and Andrew.

Memorial services were held last week.

Arrangements are by Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick.
