TOPSHAM — Richard Sterling Porter, 85, of Governor’s Way, died Aug. 24.

He was born May 14, 1929, in Newton, Massachusetts, the son of W. Edwin and Mabel Saunders Porter.

He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, Princeton University and University of Virginia Law School. Later, he served as lieutenant in the U.S. Army and worked for Alcan Inc. for 31 years.

In 1955, he married Sara Patten McCrum, and the couple lived in Virginia, Ohio and Quebec. After his retirement, they moved to Brunswick in 1988 and to Topsham in 2007.

Porter was predeceased by his wife. He is survived by his son, John Sterling Porter, of Brunswick; son, Edwin Ross Porter, his wife, Karon Diane Salch, and their son, Samuel John Porter, of Brunswick; and a brother, William Ross Porter, of Dallas.

At the family’s request, there was no funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to Tedford-Oasis Programs, P.O. Box 958, Brunswick, ME 04011.
