NORTH YARMOUTH — Richard Burton “Dick” Cleaves, 76, died unexpectedly at his home on Oct. 23. 

On June 12, 1933, he was born in Portland, a son of Rueben and Doris (Harriman) Cleaves.

After he graduated from Deering High School, he played baseball for several years with the Deering Hobos.

From 1952 to 1964 he served in the National Guard until he was honorably discharged.

For 30 years he worked at the IGA in Yarmouth. After he retired from IGA, he worked as a custodian in the  MSAD 51 school system from 1985 to 1998.

He was a member of the North Yarmouth Fire Department for 20 years, serving 10 years as a captain.

He also volunteered as a Cub Scout leader.

He was predeceased by a son, Paul G. Cleaves.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Carole of North Yarmouth; two sons, Richard M. Cleaves and his wife Kimberly of Augusta, and Christopher A. Cleaves of North Yarmouth; his brother Stanley Cleaves and his wife Margaret of Rockland, Mass., his sister Diane Silverman and her husband Jack of Seabrook, N.H.; six grandchildren, Savannah, Cassandra, Jared, Carter, Joshua and Samantha; three great-grandchildren, Chase, Brady and Haile; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held last week.

Arrangements are by The Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth.

Memorial contributions may be made to the North Yarmouth Fire Department or the American Cancer Society.
