SCARBOROUGH — A wooded six-acre lot across from the Maine Medical Center research campus on Route 1 is for sale by the state.
The property is listed for $695,000, but assessed at only $225,300.
The lot, owned by the Department of Transportation and listed by CBRE The Boulos Co., is zoned for residential use. But both the real estate agency and Scarborough Economic Development Corp. are hoping to change that.
“We plan to bring this to the council at the first meeting in October,” SEDCO President and Executive Director Harvey Rosenfeld said.
Rosenfeld said he would like to see the property developed into a bio-medical or technology building and will be asking the council to change the zoning to reflect that use.
“It’s a great location,” Rosenfeld said, adding that businesses have approached him in the past about the property, but that the state had never been willing to sell.
The property is at the corner of the Interstate295 spur and Route 1. The address is technically on Elmwood Avenue, a residential street off Greenacres Lane.
Calls to the Maine DOT were not returned by deadline.
