PORTLAND — A retired teacher will receive a 2014 Real Heroes award from the American Red Cross on Wednesday, April 30.

Janice Parker, a daily volunteer at Longfellow Elementary School, was nominated by school staff for her “courage, kindness, and unselfish character,” according to a news release from the School Department.

Parker, who retired three years ago, spent most of her 41-year career as a teacher at Longfellow. Since retiring, she has volunteered at the school nearly every day, including summer months. In 2013 alone, she volunteered “more than 1,200 hours, in addition to time spent preparing at home,” according to the release.
