SOUTH PORTLAND — City officials are joining with social service professionals to educate residents living in the Redbank and Brick Hill areas about services being offered at the new resource hub and by more than a dozen local organizations.
The resource fair will take place on Thursday, Dec. 10, from 4-7 p.m. at the Redbank Community Center, 1 MacArthur St.
While parents may be most interested in finding out about support services, public transportation and recreation programs, their children will likely be more interested in the new playground that will be installed next spring or early summer next to the Redbank Community Center. Kids will be able to help the city choose playground components from samples and photographs.
“We’ve got a lot of stuff for kids to pick,” City Manager Jim Gailey said in a press release. “There are over 10 types of slides and 35 different types of climbing equipment.”
The playground will replace an older play area associated with the former Mary Marsh School, which was closed in 2005 and subsequently demolished. Since then, neighborhood residents have complained about the lack of an adequate play area for their children.
Meanwhile, other residents will be able to get more information about services offered at the Neighborhood Hub in Redbank, located in a portable classroom next to the Redbank General Store..
The hub is operated by the city and the Community Partnership for Protecting Children. It was established earlier this year, using federal grant money, to create a one-stop shop for social services.
Residents can learn more about programs targeting healthy living, substance abuse, senior support, adult education, English language learners, faith-based organizations, free and reduced school lunch, community policing, mental health and counseling, Head Start, general assistance, free and reduced health care and assistance for food, heating oil and electricity.
Light refreshments will be provided by the city.
