FREEPORT — Thoughtful, skilled, mild-mannered, yet determined.
Those are a few of the words used to describe the town’s Citizen of the Year, Rod Regier.
Town Councilor Charlotte Bishop honored Regier at the Town Council meeting Tuesday, Jan. 19, for his nearly 30 years of work within the community.
Regier was lauded for his contribution to improving the town quality of life, its reputation and the well-being of its citizens.
“This award is very well deserved,” Bishop said. “I just wish we could clone him.”
In addition to being widely respected and admired, Bishop said Regier’s years of service to the town are to be commended.
Regier was instrumental in the development of the Solid Waste and Recycling program and served as the chairman of the solid waste recycling study committee, Bishop said. He has served on the ecomaine board of directors since 2004, was on the Board of Appeals, served as chairman and vice chairman of the Town Council and has been on the Traffic and Parking Committee for many years.
In addition, she said, Regier’s work on water quality issues for the town, the state Department of Marine Resources, the Maine Clammers Association and the Shellfish Commission has helped keep the clam flats open, provided people with an income, and improved the cleanliness of Casco Bay.
Sewer District Chairman Leland Arris said Regier has been instrumental in supporting the clamming industry and is owed an incredible debt for his hard work. Regier, an oceanographer and graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, fought for clean water and demanded fair testing practices in the Harraseeket River, he said.
Regier said he was “touched, honored and embarrassed” to receive the award, but said he was grateful to be honored.
He said his work keeping the waters clean and productive involved a lot of people.
“I am just one part of this,” he said. “It has been astonishing to watch the positive development over the years. Everyone has come such a long way.”
