AUGUSTA — State Sen. Lawrence Bliss, D-South Portland, picked up an additional 11 votes in a recount of ballots cast on Nov. 2 to win re-election in District 7, the secretary of state’s office said in a press release.

Senate District 7 represents South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and part of Scarborough.

Official results following the recount, conducted Nov. 12 at Maine State Police headquarters in Augusta, showed that Bliss defeated Republican challenger Joseph Palmieri of South Portland by 75 votes, 9,172 to 9,097.

Bliss had an unofficial 64-vote lead before the recount.

There have been 132 recounts of state and county races since 1980, according to Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, but only 10 outcomes have been overturned.
