HARPSWELL — A recount on Sunday did not change the outcome of the March 12 School Administrative District 75 election.

Write-in candidate Sheryl Johnson requested the recount. In the initial tally, Johnson received 286 votes, trailing incumbent Jane Meisenbach, with 484 votes, and Kay Ogrodnik, who received 306.

There were two seats available on the SAD 75 board. Johnson only gained four votes in the recount, to finish 16 votes behind Ogrodnik.

Johnson on Wednesday said the recounters found 31 ballots where voters wrote in her name. But they failed to fill in the corresponding oval, so their votes didn’t count.

“I would have won had people filled in the ovals,” she said.

Johnson said she anticipated this type of confusion, so during the campaign she distributed information explaining to voters what they needed to do to vote for a write-in candidate.

“Despite all that, there were some people that still didn’t follow directions, unfortunately,” she said.

Johnson said she plans to run again either next year or in 2013, and next time she’ll definitely submit nomination papers to appear on the ballot.
