FALMOUTH — Residents may be eligible for a $50 rebate for recycling old refrigerators and freezers.

Efficiency Maine’s new recycling program encourages Mainers who own older refrigerators and freezers to have them picked up at no cost. Older refrigerators and freezers can require as much as four times more energy to operate than newer models built to higher energy efficiency standards.

That inefficiency can result in as much as $250 per year in unnecessary electricity costs.

Appliances scheduled for pick-up must be in working order, clean and empty. They must have an inside measurement between 10 and 20 cubic feet. Dorm or “mini” refrigerators are not accepted.

Recycled refrigerators and freezers are taken to an EPA-approved facility to ensure proper disposal and prevent leaks of mercury and other toxins. The process returns up to 95 percent of appliance components back into the manufacturing stream to become new products.
