SCARBOROUGH — Raymond Clayton Hill, 74, of Scarborough, died Sept. 10, with his wife, Judy, by his side.

Hill was born Dec. 20, 1939, in Fryeburg, the son of Fred and Adelaide (Mann) Hill. He was raised in Fryeburg and attended Fryeburg Academy.

At age 18, he started working as an automobile mechanic at Cedric Moore Garage, in Portland. There, he met his future wife, Judith Pratt. They were married on June 6, 1959, settled in Portland and raised four children.

After moving to Scarborough, Hill worked two jobs supporting his family. During the day, he worked for the Maine Department of Transportation as a truck mechanic; at night, he worked part-time as a mechanic for The Portland News Co. Eventually, Hill was promoted to equipment supervisor at MDOT, a position he held for 34 years and from which he retired.

Hill enjoyed spending time with his family, whether fishing and camping in Jackman and Mount Blue, or barbecuing at the family camp on Raymond Pond. Hill and his wife were also frequently aboard their boat, the Judy-Ray, on Sebago Lake.

Hill loved to putter in his vegetable garden and to tinker with cars. His family called him “Mr. Fix-it” because he could repair just about anything.
