SOUTH PORTLAND — Rae Ellen Kimball, 63, died Oct. 22 at Maine Medical Center with her family by her side, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Kimball was born May 10, 1950, in Portland. She was the daughter of Stanley P. and Viola A. Conley Main. She attended local schools and graduated from South Portland High School, Class of 1968.

She met John Kimball while in high school, and after a determined chase, she finally agreed to marriage. They were wed at the Calvary Chapel in South Portland on Aug. 23, 1969. Together they worked, lived and raised their family in South Portland, a 44-year journey that only grew stronger during her battle with cancer.

They also owned and operated Kimball’s Garage, a South Portland landmark for more than 50 years. Kimball worked as the office manager, greeting customers, working with vendors and handling the books.

She was an active member of the South Portland Boosters Club during her children’s school years. She and her husband loved stock car racing at Beech Ridge and Oxford Plains. She also enjoyed visiting casinos, crocheting and braiding rugs, and was an animal lover. She and her husband liked to vacation in the Caribbean, although flying was not her favorite thing. A firm grip on her husband’s hand during take-off always made the flight manageable.

She is survived by her parents, Stanley and Viola Main, of South Portland; her husband of 44 years, John Kimball, of South Portland; daughter, Karen M. Kimball and son, Kevin M. Kimball, both of South Portland; two sisters, Beverly Logan, of South Portland, and Barbara and husband Mark Foley, of South Portland; six grandchildren, Austin and Evan Adams, Owen Hanscom, Stanley Kimball, Carley Kimball and Madelyn Kimball, all of South Portland; sisters-in-law, Joanne Kimball Stegall, Jane Kimball Foley and Susan Kimball; and extended family including many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
