PORTLAND — The School Committee has scheduled a public hearing for Wednesday, March 25, on the proposed $91.2 million fiscal 2010 budget.

The proposed budget would represent a $1.7 million, or 1.9 percent, increase over the current budget and increase the School Department’s share of the local tax rate by 2.4 percent, assuming revenues do not change.

The budget proposal eliminates 23.6 positions and includes $100,000 for an assistant superintendent to oversee the district’s high schools.

The hearing will start at 7 p.m. in room 250 of Casco Bay High School, 196 Allen Ave.

The School Committee is scheduled to vote on the budget April 1. The City Council, which sets the school’s bottom line, is expected to vote on the budget on April 8.

Residents, who must also approve the budget, will vote on the spending plan on May 12.
