BRUNSWICK — A former School Board member will go head-to-head on Election Day with the incumbent who unseated him in 2010.

Byron Watson, who served on the School Board from 2008-2011, and incumbent board member Richard Ellis are both running in District 1. 

As of Wednesday morning, the Ellis-Watson contest would be one of only two contested elections for School Board and Town Council on the Nov. 5 ballot.

Nomination papers for the District 1, 2 and 6 seats on the board and council are due Friday at 4:30 p.m, and as of Wednesday three council candidates had no opponents.

Watson was ousted as School Board chairman in 2010 because of an allegedly inappropriate and sexist email he sent to former House Speaker Hannah Pingree, D-North Haven.

Councilor David Watson, Byron Watson’s father, has returned papers for re-election in District 1.

Steve Walker, a Planning Board member, was the only candidate for the District 2 council seat, where Councilor Ben Tucker is not seeking re-election.

Allison Harris is running in District 6 to replace Councilor Margo Knight, who is also not seeking re-election.

For the School Board, incumbent Janet Connors in District 6 will face a challenge from Daniel Hammond Jr., a newcomer in the town’s political arena.

Board member Brenda Clough has not returned nomination papers to seek re-election in District 2, but she said Wednesday that she plans to return her papers by Friday.

According to the town clerk’s office, no one else has taken out nomination papers for Town Council and School Board positions.
