Flyhalf Francisco Marques of Greely kicks to relieve pressure during Saturday’s game as the Portland boys’ U-19 rugby club defeated Kearsage, N.H., 35-25, in a game played in New London, N,H. Center Jon Brown, of Portland High, opened the scoring for the Power Pigs by running in an intercepted pass. The try was converted by Marques (Greely). Scrumhalf Ian Keith (Portland) scored two quick tries to open up a 17-0 lead and Portland looked to be on its way. Kearsage had other ideas, however, and scored just before half to close to 17-5. In the second half, Kearsage again crossed the try line and converted to make the score 17-12. Keith scored his third try and center Chase Rochon (Greely) added a penalty kick to up the score to 25-12. Kearsage scored and slotted a penalty making it 25-20 and after the Portland scrumhalf scored his fourth try, Kearsage kept up the pressure with another score making it 30-25 with just over four minutes to go. The Pigs kept the ball in their opponents’ end, and flanker Caleb Tracey (Cape Elizabeth) scored on the final play of the match, bringing an end to a very spirited affair.
