Every sport but boys’ hockey has hit the postseason and there will be plenty of playoff excitement on tap for Mid-Coast teams in the days to come. Here’s a glimpse:

Boys’ basketball

Two local teams will take part in the 2010 boys’ basketball tournament.

In Eastern A, Brunswick, which lost 65-63 at home to Cony, then won 60-43 at Morse to finish 16-2, will be the No. 5 seed and has to face No. 4 Hampden (14-4) Saturday at 8 p.m., at the Augusta Civic Center. The teams did not meet this year. A victory in that game would sent the Dragons to the semifinals Wednesday, likely against top-ranked Brewer (15-3).

Morse finished 3-15 after losses to Erskine (48-45) and Brunswick (60-43) last week. The Shipbuilders wound up 11th in the final Eastern A Heal Points standings, but only eight teams qualified for the playoffs.

Mt. Ararat lost 63-35 at home to defending regional champion Edward Little, then closed with a 47-42 home win over Oxford Hills to wind up 8-10, good for ninth in the region, but not enough to make a trip to Augusta.

In Western D, Hyde is back in the tournament. The Phoenix closed with a 67-49 loss at Old Orchard Beach, but still wound up 10-4, good for the No. 5 seed. Hyde will face No. 4 Forest Hills (13-5) in the quarterfinals Saturday at 11:30 a.m., in Augusta. The teams did not meet this year. A victory in that round would send the Phoenix to the semifinals Wednesday, likely against top-ranked Richmond (16-1). Hyde did not play Richmond this winter.

Girls’ basketball

On the girls’ side, Morse and Mt. Ararat will meet in a compelling quarterfinal round Eastern A game Friday at 7 p.m. in Augusta.

The Eagles finished 11-7 and earned the No. 4 seed after ending the regular year with a 35-31 overtime victory over Edward Little and a 35-26 loss at Oxford Hills.

The Shipbuilders go in as the No. 5 seed with a 13-5 mark. Morse won 68-45 over visiting Erskine, then lost 60-42 at Brunswick in the final week of the regular season.

On Opening Night, way back on Dec. 4, host Morse defeated Mt. Ararat, 57-47. On Jan. 7, in Topsham, the Eagles won, 53-38.

The winner Friday will advance to the semifinals Wednesday, likely against top-ranked Skowhegan (18-0).

Brunswick goes in third with a 14-4 mark. The Dragons closed the regular season with wins over Cony (54-43) and Morse (60-42). Brunswick will battle No. 6 Messalonskee (11-7) in the quarterfinals Friday at 3 p.m. The Dragons beat the Eagles twice this year, 48-41 in Oakland on Dec, 19 and 59-58 at home Jan. 16. If victorious, Brunswick will play either No. 2 Edward Little (13-5) or No. 7 Hampden Academy (12-6) in the semifinals Wednesday.

In Western D, Hyde closed with a 48-37 win at Old Orchard Beach last week to finish 3-11, but the Phoenix failed to qualify for the postseason.

Hockey

With the girls’ hockey season finished for Brunswick, the Dragons boys’ squad is hoping to qualify for the playoffs. Last week, Brunswick tied host Cheverus 2-2, then lost 5-1 at home to Bangor to drop to 5-8-1 on the season. The Dragons were eighth in the latest Eastern A Heals, but only seven teams will make the playoffs. Brunswick is at St. Dom’s Thursday and closes the season at home Saturday versus Kennebunk.

Mt. Ararat is playing out the string. The Eagles lost 4-2 at home to Messalonskee last Tuesday to fall to 2-13 on the season. Mt. Ararat (12th in Eastern A) was home with Sanford Tuesday, hosted Cony Thursday, then closes at Hall-Dale Tuesday of next week.

In the boys’ meet, the Dragons won seven individual events (highlighted by standout Will Geoghegan setting a new record in the mile, 4 minutes, 19.77 seconds). Brunswick also won a pair of relays. Its 3,200 relay team (Geoghegan, Patrick Horan, Liam Cassidy and Stephen Purcell) also set a new mark (8:23.1).

In the girls’ meet, Kathleen McMahon led Brunswick with wins in the mile and two-mile. In all, the Dragons won seven individual events and two relays.

The Class A state championship meet is Monday at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham. The competition begins at 10 a.m.

Morse was third in the Western B regionals. Tyler Russell won the 189-pound division.

After a 16-2 regular season, Stephen Carter and the Brunswick boys’ basketball team is hoping to make a deep run in the Eastern A tournament.

Kate Thibodeau and her Morse teammates are one of several teams capable of winning the Eastern A girls’ basketball tournament.
