The swimming and skiing state meets were held last week and the last holdout, boys’ hockey, has its postseason under way.

March is coming in like a lion and the winter sports season isn’t going quietly.

Here’s a look back and ahead:

Swimming

Cape Elizabeth’s swim teams were both third at last week’s Class A state championship meets.

The boys had 245.5 points and finished behind perennial champion Bangor (384) and Cheverus (280).

Noah Becker, Evan Long, Griffin Thoreck and Marcus Cloutier combined to win the 200 free relay (1 minute, 32.30 seconds).

Long won the 50 free (22.13 seconds) and placed third in the breaststroke (1:03.97). Cloutier was second in the 50 free (22.19) and runner-up in the 100 free (48.65). Kevin Flathers was second in diving (334.55 points). Peter Doane was fourth in diving (272.75). Tom Robinson finished fifth in both the 200 free (1:53.87) and the 500 free (5:17.16).

Scarborough (94 points) finished ninth. Diver Tito Alas finished fifth (263.00). Nathaniel Duggan was fifth in the 100 butterfly (58.00). Drew Doran placed seventh in the fly (58.20).

South Portland (84 points) was 10th. Diver Keith Carmichael placed sixth (262.75). Chad MacWhinnie was seventh in the 100 free (51.71).

In the girls’ meet, the Capers had 234 points to finish third behind Bangor and Messalonskee. The Red Storm (34 points) finished 18th. The Red Riots (30 points) tied Noble for 19th.

Cape Elizabeth’s medley relay team (Hannah Homans, Heather Kraft, Gabrielle Cloutier and Caroline Herriman) was runner-up to Bangor in 1:53.11. The 200 free relay (Homans, Herriman, Cloutier and Kraft) was third (1:43.59).

Individually, Homans was runner-up in the backstroke (59.68) and fifth in the 500 free (25.82). Kraft was third in the breaststroke (1:08.03) and fourth in the fly (1:01.72). Catherine Tierney finished fifth in the 200 free (2:05.56) and sixth in the 500 free (5:50.80). Noelle Webster placed seventh in the 500 free (5:51.86).

For Scarborough, Dayna Ankermann finished eighth in the fly (1:05.60).

South Portland’s 200 free relay team (Emma Tremblay, Nicole Fogg. Lauren Halvorsen and Abby Onos) placed 10th (1:56.27).

Skiing

Cape Elizabeth took part in the Class B ski championships last week in Presque Isle.

The boys were third in Alpine, fifth in Nordic and fourth overall (Yarmouth was the champion).

Sam and Max Barber went 1-2 in the giant slalom (Sam had a two-run combined time of 1 minute, 16.11 seconds, Max finished in 1:17.85). Sam Barber finished third in the slalom (1:18.90). Max Barber was ninth (1:22.64).

On the Nordic side, James Yokabaskas was 10th in the skate (15:02.7) and 12th in the classic (18:50.8).

The girls scored only in Nordic (fourth). Dana Hatton was eighth in the skate (17:21.0) and 16th in the classic (26:05.0).

While the Capers didn’t score in Alpine, Sara Paclat was 17th in the slalom (1:47.25) and 18th in the GS (1:31.73) and Elin Sonesson finished 19th in the GS (1:31.92).

In Class A, Scarborough’s girls were sixth and the boys 11th in the Alpine competition.

Abby Mills was fourth in the girls’ slalom (1:44.20) and seventh in the GS (1:33.20).

Matt McAlary was 39th in the boys’ slalom (1:55.65).

Anders Jepson finished seventh in the skimeister competition.

Hockey

The boys’ hockey playoffs began Tuesday when Scarborough, the No. 3 seed in Western Class A, hosted sixth-ranked Biddeford in the quarterfinals. The game was played at the University of Southern Maine, which is no longer Scarborough’s home ice.

The Red Storm, 12-4-2 in the regular season, lost in overtime and tied the Tigers this year and had dropped the three previous playoff meetings with Biddeford.

The Red Storm managed to pass this test as Jordan Bathe scored to give Scarborough an early lead and after the Tigers tied the game with a shorthanded goal in the second period, Cam Loiselle scored on a rebound 35 seconds into the second half to put the Red Storm ahead to stay. Garrett McDonald added a goal with 9:25 to play and Scarborough held on for a 3-1 win.

“This was a tough draw for both of us,” said Red Storm coach Norm Gagne. “Neither of us had played (at USM) so I was concerned. I told the kids before the third period, it was going to come down to wants it. Biddeford’s gritty. My kids adjusted well. We had to outwork them.”

Scarborough advanced to face second-ranked Falmouth (14-4-1) Saturday at 8 p.m. in the semifinals at the Colisee in Lewiston. The Red Storm handled the visiting Yachtsmen, 5-2, back on Jan 9, but last Thursday, Scarborough was humbled at Falmouth, 6-0.

The Red Storm have won the previous three playoff meetings. The most recent was a 5-1 triumph in the 2007 semifinals.

“We’ll have to step up our game,” said Gagne. “They just embarrassed us. Their forwards a force. Playing on neutral ice will make a difference. We’ve played well in Lewiston in the past.”

The Western A Final is Tuesday of next week, also in Lewiston. If Scarborough advances, it will meet either top-ranked, defending state champion Thornton Academy, No. 4 Cheverus or No. 5 Marshwood/Traip. The Class A state final is Saturday, March 10 at 6 p.m., in Lewiston.

South Portland fell short of the playoffs with a 4-14 record (the Red Riots were 12th in the standings, but only 10 teams qualified). It closed with a 9-1 home loss to Biddeford last Wednesday.

In Western B, Cape Elizabeth finished 9-6-3 and third in the Heal Points standings after a 4-2 regular season-ending loss at Greely last Thursday. The Capers got a bye into the semifinals and will battle defending state champion York (11-5-2), the No. 2 seed, Saturday at 5 p.m., at the Portland Ice Arena.

Cape Elizabeth tied the host Wildcats, 1-1, back on Dec. 14 and lost to them at home, 4-0, Feb. 16. The Capers are 2-1 all-time in the postseason versus York, but lost to the Wildcats in last years semis, 5-1.

If Cape Elizabeth can advance, it will play either top-ranked Greely or No. 5 Yarmouth in the regional final Wednesday, in Lewiston. The Class B state game is Saturday, March 10 at 1 p.m., in Lewiston.
