The postseason is upon us, even if many local squads are still winding down their regular seasons.

This past Saturday, the first championships of the 2013 fall sports season were bestowed and there will be many more to come.

Here’s a glimpse at what occurred last week and what’s on this week’s docket:

Golf

Brunswick’s golf team qualified for the Class A state match and Saturday at Natanis, the Dragons shot a 353 to tie Deering and Marshwood for ninth. The Dragons were paced by Derek Devereaux, who shot a 79. Also scoring ere Cameron Heat (89), Ben Lord (90) and John Parker (95), while Matt Brooks (96) also took part.

Football

The seemingly unstoppable Brunswick football team proved mortal last weekend when it suffered a 21-14 overtime loss to Messalonskee. The Dragons are still first in the Eastern Class B Crabtree Points standings and look to bounce back Friday when they go to 2-4 Lawrence.

In Western B, Morse fell to 3-3 and seventh after a 50-7 home loss to undefeated powerhouse Kennebunk. The Shipbuilders go to defending regional champion Marshwood (5-1) Friday.

Mt. Ararat blanked visiting Oceanside, 32-0, last weekend to improve to 3-3 and eighth in Western B. The Eagles play host to 4-2 Falmouth Friday.

Boys’ soccer

Mt. Ararat’s boys’ soccer team began the week 8-2-2 and fourth in the Eastern Class A Heal Points standings after a 1-1 tie at Lewiston and a 1-0 home victory over Brewer last week. The Eagles go to Hampden Academy Saturday and close at home versus rival Brunswick Tuesday.

The Dragons were 7-5 and sixth after a 5-1 victory at Oxford Hills and a 3-2 home triumph over Mt. Blue. Brunswick played at Lawrence Thursday and closes at Mt. Ararat Tuesday.

In Western B, Morse sat 12th at press time (only 10 teams make the playoffs). The Shipbuilders fell to 1-10-1 after 4-0 losses at Lincoln and at home to Maranacook. Morse was at Gardiner Tuesday and closes at home versus Erskine Tuesday of next week.

Girls’ soccer

On the girls’ side, Mt. Ararat was second to three-time defending regional champion Bangor in the Eastern A Heals at press time after downing visiting Lewiston, 3-0, host Lawrence, 2-0, and host Brewer, 4-0, last week. Nikki Bradstreet, Katie Labbay and Christine Levesque scored against the Blue Devils. Bradstreet and Torri Pelletier had the goals against the Bulldogs. The Eagles (11-1) host Hampden Academy Saturday and close at Brunswick Tuesday.

The Dragons were 7-4-1 and fifth after a 2-0 home victory over Oxford Hills and a 2-2 tie at Mt. Blue. After hosting Lawrence Thursday, Brunswick closes at home against Mt. Ararat Tuesday.

In Western B, Morse is coming off a 0-0 home tie against Lincoln Academy and a 2-1 win at Maranacook last week. Amanda Gagne and Ruth Nadeau had goals in the victory. The Shipbuilders (8-2-2 and third behind Greely and Cape Elizabeth in the standings) hosted Gardiner Tuesday and welcomes Erskine in the finale Tuesday of next week.

Field hockey

While the final Heal Points aren’t set, Mt. Ararat’s field hockey team appears playoff-bound. The Eagles finished the regular season 7-7 after beating visiting Lewiston (4-1) and Brunswick (10-1) last week. Mt. Ararat will either be seventh or eighth for the playoffs and will have the daunting task of visiting either perennial champion Skowhegan or talented Messalonskee in the quarterfinal round.

Brunswick wound up 1-13 and 11th after losses to to visiting Edward Little (2-1) and at Mt. Ararat (10-1). After winning their opener, the Dragons lost their final 13 games.

Morse took a 2-11 record and the No. 11 seed into Tuesday’s finale at Erskine (only nine teams make the Western B playoffs).

Cross country

The final regular season cross country meets were held last weekend.

Brunswick and Morse took part at the Camden Hills Invitational, where the Dragons boys were first (the Shipbuilders came in second). Individually, Brunswick was led by runner-up Christopher Tanner, while Morse’s Christopher Walfield placed third. In the girls’ meet, Brunswick came in first, while Morse was third. The Dragons featured Teresa Murphy and Tessa Cassidy, who finished 1-2. The Shipbuilders were paced by Amy Franklin, who came in sixth.

Mt. Ararat took part at the Mt. Blue Relays, where the girls’ placed third and the boys fifth.

The conference championship is Saturday. Regionals will be held Oct. 26. The state championships are Nov. 2.
