PORTLAND — Police are investigating a Nov. 18 Old Port altercation where a bystander was wounded.

Lt. Robert Martin said Monday Joseph Gonzalez, 21, of Lewiston is being held on other charges, but no one has been formally charged in the 1 a.m. incident near 10 Dana St.

Martin said two men got into a dispute near the intersection of Wharf and Dana streets, and one man pulled out a handgun.

The other tried to grab it and the gun went off, wounding the unidentified male bystander in the forehead. The victim was taken to Mercy Hospital, treated and released.

A suspect was last seen running toward Fore Street, wearing a gray T-shirt and red jacket. Martin said the suspect is between 5 feet, 7 inches and 6 feet tall.

Gonzalez was later found near Congress Street and Deering Avenue. He fled as police tried to question him, and was arrested in an alley nearby, Martin said. Gonzalez was charged with unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, refusing to submit to arrest or detention and criminal simulation. The third charge stems from his alleged possession of a handgun with an altered serial number, Martin said.
