City winter sports athletes took fans on a three-month ride of excitement and triumph. As expected, an abundance of Bulldogs, Flyers, Lions, Rams and Stags have been named to postseason all-star teams. Here’s a full accounting:

Boys’ basketball

Class A state champion Cheverus, as well as perennial powers Deering and Portland, had players honored on the Southern Maine Activities Association all-star team.

The first team included Cheverus senior Indiana Faithfull and Deering sophomore Jon Amabile. South Portland’s Matt Lee, Thornton Academy’s Andrew Shaw and Westbrook’s Dominic Borelli and Nich Jobin (the league’s most valuable player) were the other first teamers.

Cheverus junior Alex Furness, Stags sophomore Louie DiStasio, Deering senior Eddie Tirabassi and Portland senior Koang Thok, along with Scarborough’s Conor Sullivan and Windham’s Garrett Clemmer, made the second team.

Deering’s Nick Colucci and Portland’s Joe Zukowski were among the honorable mentions.

Cheverus’ DiStasio, teammate Griffin Brady and Portland’s Nate Smart were on the SMAA All-Rookie team.

DiStasio was named the SMAA Rookie of the Year.

Cheverus’ Faithfull and Kyle Randall, Deering’s Tirabassi and Portland’s Thok and Zukowski were named SMAA Senior All-Stars. Faithfull had 25 points and Randall added three to lead the dark team to a 118-95 victory over the white in the all-star game. Tirabassi had 13 points and Thok eight in defeat.

In the Western Maine Conference, Waynflete senior John Malia was a Class C first-team mention. Flyers seniors Cecil Gardner and Bill Ngoal made the second team.

Malia (12 points), Gardner (eight) and Ngoal (three) helped the black team beat the grey, 80-76, in the Senior All-Star Game.

Waynflete’s Josiah Baker-Connick, Sam Cleaves and Sam Fillinger earned mention on the WMC All-Academic team.

Cheverus’ Faithfull and Portland’s Thok made the Maine McDonald’s Class A/B West Senior All-Star team. Faithfull had 27 points and Thok added 19 to help the West cruise to a 103-88 triumph.

Cheverus’ Randall was the Western Region boys’ foul shooting champion and made the Maine McDonald’s Senior All-State Academic team. At the Senior All-Star weekend in Bangor, Randall won a $1,000 scholarship and took the state free throw shooting title, making 48-of-50 attempts.

Last, but certainly not least, Faithfull was named Mr. Maine Basketball.

Girls’ basketball

The story was similar on the girls’ side.

In the SMAA, Cheverus sophomore Alexandra-Palazzi-Leahy, Deering senior Claire Ramonas and junior Kayla Burchill and McAuley sophomore Alexa Coulombe and junior Rebecca Knight highlighted the first team. Biddeford’s Keila Grigware, Gorham’s Mia Rapolla, Scarborough’s Christy Manning, Thornton Academy’s Hannah Ebling and Windham’s Meghan Gribbin were also on the squad.

Cheverus senior Theresa Hendrix, McAuley senior Caitlin Cimino and Portland junior Nicolette Kapothanasis were honorable mentions.

The All-Rookie team included Cheverus freshmen Brooke Flaherty and Mikayla Mayberry, Deering senior Maria Salamone, junior Aarika Viola and sophomore Ella Ramonas, McAuley freshmen Hannah Cooke and Molly Mack and Portland sophomore Katryna Gilson.

Cheverus’ Hendrix, Deering’s Claire Ramonas and Britni Mikulanecz and McAuley’s Coulombe wre named to the All-Defensive team.

The SMAA All-Academic team included Cheverus’ Hendrix, Keturah Smith and Anna Snook and McAuley’s Margaret Cruz.

Deering’s Claire Ramonas and Salamone, McAuley’s Cimino and Portland’s Mariah Callender and Jill Russell played in the SMAA Senior All-Star game. Callender had 12 points to lead the white team to an 85-58 victory. Cimino had 12 points, Ramonas 10 and Salamone three in defeat.

In the WMC, Senior Morgan Woodhouse and freshman Martha Veroneau of conference champion Waynflete earned Class C first team mention.

Woodhouse earned mention on the WMC All-Academic team.

Woodhouse was also the winner of the Bob Butler Award.

Woodhouse had seven points and nine rebounds and scored the go-ahead bucket in the white team’s 63-59 win in the Senior All-Star game. Waynflete’s Brandon Salway served as coach.

At the state level, Deering’s Ramonas made the Class A/B West squad (coached by Deering’s Mike Murphy) and Woodhouse was on the West C/D team (coached by Salway) for the Maine McDonald’s Senior All-Star games.

Deering’s Burchill was the West Region foul shooting champion.

Woodhouse was a semifinalist for the Miss Maine Basketball award.

Boys’ hockey

On the ice this season, Portland senior defenseman Scott Briggs made the boys’ Class A all-state West first-team. Portland senior Jason Knight, a forward, was a second-team selection. Cheverus’ Sean Oddy and Portland’s Eddie Apon were honorable mentions.

Cheverus’s Matt Cartmell and Portland’s Briggs qualified for the All-Academic team.

Portland won the Sportsmanship Award.

Deering seniors Riley Asbury (defense), Ben Rodick (forward) and Travis Wade (defense) and junior Connor Petropoulos (forward) made the Tier III all-conference team. Deering’s Alex Eye was an honorable mention.

Asbury made the All-Academic team.

Deering won the Sportsmanship Award.

Briggs was chosen as a Class A Senior All-Star.

Girls’ hockey

On the girls’ side, state champion Cheverus placed five players on the All-West first team. That group included senior goalie Saundrine Lanouette, senior defensemen Grace Fitzpatrick and Caitlin Pleau and senior forwards Alyssa Audet and Sage Witham. Portland sophomore forward Raechel Allen also made the first team.

The second squad included Cheverus junior forward Emily Sawchuck, Deering senior goalie Julie Pallozzi and junior forward Jennifer Lynch and Portland freshman defenseman Drew Barry.

Cheverus sophomore defenseman Sarah LaQuerre, Deering junior forward Adrienne Broadwater and Portland senior defenseman Ally Dolan were honorable mentions.

Indoor track

The SMAA indoor track and field all-star team had plenty of city representation.

First teamers included Cheverus’ John White (shot put), Andrew Snyder (600) and Jack Terwilliger (mile and two-mile), Deering’s Tony Sen (junior 45 hurdles), Carleton Allen (senior 45) and its open relay team (featuring Allen, David Nguyen, Sam Balzano and Renaldo Lowry) and Portland’s Imadhi Zagon (senior 40, senior 200 and long jump).

Deering’s Lowry made the second team in the senior 200. Cheverus’ Beau Michaud (shot put) and Taylor Dundas (mile and two-mile) also qualified for the second team.

Cheverus’ Jackson McMann (junior 45 hurdles), James Rutter (senior shot put) and Snyder (senior 800), Deering’s Balzano (senior 40) and Portland’s Zagon (300 and high jump) were third-team mentions.

On the girls’ side, first teamers included Cheverus’ Fiona Hendry (junior 800, mile and two-mile) and Caroline Summa (high jump), Deering’s Tricia Stewart (junior 200 and long jump), its junior relay team (Stewart, Samantha Regios, Nicole Mason and Delaney Loring) and McAuley’s Allina Verrillo (senior shot put).

Cheverus’ Liana Rubinoff (two-mile) and Katie Shapiro (junior shot put) and Deering’s Veronica Mitchell (junior 45 hurdles), Claire Ramonas (senior shot put) and Stewart (junior 40, high jump and triple jump) were second teamers.

Portland’s Eleni Anderson (junior 400) made the third team.

Swimming

The Southern Maine Swim League all-conference team had its share of local stars.

The boys’ first team included Cheverus’ Cal Rhode (200 free and 500 free) and Deering’s Djordje Mandic (50 free, 200 medley relay and 200 free relay) and Brian McRae (diving).

Cheverus’ Cameron Lindsley (200 medley relay and 200 free relay) and Rhode (200 free relay) and Deering’s Mandic (100 free) qualified for the second team.

Cheverus’ Mark Dumond (100 breaststroke) Trebor Lawton (100 butterfly) were on the third team.

The male All-Academic team included Cheverus’ Mark Beahm, Dumond, Lindsley, Eric Martin and Andrew Thompson, Deering’s Thomas Beaudoin, Donald Bennett, Maxwell Holden, Noah Major, McRae, Izaak Njaa, Jake Powers and Zach Sawyer and Portland’s Max Dismore and Alexander Donatelle.

On the girls’ side, Cheverus’ Tessa Lindsley (200 free relay) and Deering’s Genevieve Worthely (breaststroke, 200 individual medley and 200 medley relay) made the first team.

Cheverus’ Lindsley (400 free relay) and Samantha Savaun (200 free relay) and Deering’s Worthely (200 free relay) and Kristen Grandonico (200 free relay) were second teamers.

Cheverus’ Lindsley (50 free) made the third team.

The female All-Academic team included Cheverus’ Treasa Arey, Kayla Binford and Miriam Nielson, Deering’s Grandonico, Dayna Kazilionis, Jami LeRoy and Dali Tauwala, McAuley’s Emily Gajewski and Waynflete’s Lindsay Macleod.

The All-State teams had similar names.

The boys’ first team included Rhode in the 200 free, 500 free and 400 free relay and Mandic in the 200 free relay. The second team featured Mandic (200 medley and 400 free relays) and McRae (diving). Mandic made the third team in the 50 free.

On the girls’ side, Worthely made the first team in the breaststroke and the 200 medley relay. Worthely was also on the second team in the IM.

Skiing

The SMAA skiing all-conference team included Portland’s Carter Williams on the boys’ list and Cheverus’ Maggie Corrigan and Emily Machesney on the girls’ squad.

Cheverus’ Margaret Corrigan, Emily Machesney, Maxwell Miller and Casey Sutton qualified for the All-Academic team.

In the WMC, Waynflete’s Nate Niles made the boys’ Nordic all-star team and the All-Academic squad.

Wrestling

The SMAA wrestling all-star team included Cheverus’ Iain Whitis (103-pounds) and Deering’s Deiondrea Howard (135) and Tyler DeBardino (285).

Cheverus’ David Chandpen and James Peaco, along with Deering’s Mandy Arnott, Christopher Jost and Hank Stein made the Senior All-Academic team.

Cheering

The SMAA cheering first-team included Deering’s Morgan Bryan and Maria Villarreal. Portland’s Hong-vy Pham was named to the second team.
