Just months after leading the Portland girls’ basketball team to its best finish in a decade, Jan Veinot has stepped down as coach. Veinot, who went 45-84 overall in seven seasons, capped by a 14-6 record last winter with a trip to the Western A semifinals, said that after recently earning her PhD in counseling and taking a full-time job, she didn’t have the time to commit to coaching.
“I’m very happy I’m leaving the program better than I found it,” Veinot said. “I have to thank (Portland boys’ coach) Joe Russo, the (Portland High) administration and the community for their support. I’ll still be a Bulldog, cheering them on. There are a lot of really good young players. They should have a lot of success for many years.”
At press time, there was no immediate word on a successor.
