PORTLAND — Steve Hewins, vice president of AAA Northern New England, has been appointed interim executive director of the business-improvement group Portland’s Downtown District.
Hewins will assume the position in August, according to PDD President Bradley McCurtain, and will replace Janis Beitzer, who resigned June 14. Hewins is also a candidate to serve in the position on a full-time basis, McCurtain said.
Hewins founded Hewins Travel in 1982, and the travel agency grew to become Maine’s largest before he sold it in 2007 to AAA. Hewins has also served on the boards of directors of the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce, and as president of the Portland Community Chamber.
