PORTLAND — Business-booster group Portland’s Downtown District has hired Steven Hewins as its executive director, according to a Nov. 14 press release.

Hewins became interim executive director in August, when he was selected to replace Janis Beitzer. Beitzer resigned for personal reasons in June after eight years with the PDD.

Hewins founded Hewins Travel in 1982, and the travel agency grew to become Maine’s largest before he sold it in 2007 to AAA. Hewins has also served on the boards of directors of the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce, and as president of the Portland Community Chamber.

He was selected for the permanent position after a four-month, nationwide search, according to the PDD.

In other news, the PDD said its “Shop for a Cause Day,” Saturday, Nov. 30, will provide funds to support The Milestone Foundation’s HOME Team, an outreach program assisting people who are homeless.

The PDD represents more than 400 businesses in downtown Portland.
