PORTLAND — For the first time in the 13-year history of the city’s First Friday Art Walk, a portion of Congress Street will be closed to vehicular traffic during the walk on Friday, Dec. 6.
A half-mile stretch of Congress Street, between Brown and State streets, will be closed from 6-8 p.m. Vehicles will also prohibited from parking on this portion of Congress Street from 4-8 p.m. Side streets will remain open.
The closure will allow staging that evening of two street performances featuring acrobat artists, local performers and area students, organized by the Circus Conservatory of America.
The CCA, now being established in Portland, claims it will be the only college in the country devoted to training circus performers. The school plans to offer its first classes next year, and announced this summer that it has leased a 33,000-square-foot space in the mixed-use complex being developed at Thompon’s Point.
The “Circus in the Streets” performances, at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., will take place at Congress and Park streets.
