Bishop Robert P. Deeley, center, of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, serves a bowl of soup Friday to Portland resident Haider Hussain at St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen. The kitchen at 307 Congress St. offers free meals to the community Monday through Friday from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Clothing is also available on Fridays. Hussain said he hasn’t seen his family since he moved to the United States from Iraq in 1988, and was recently laid off from his full-time job. He wiped tears from his eyes when he described the kindness of the soup kitchen volunteers. “This place makes me very happy,” he said. About 120 people ate at the kitchen Friday.
