Snowboarder Zander Stearns, 24, of Old Orchard Beach, glides across a C box Friday during the Portland WinterFest Rail Jam. The city closed an eastbound, one-block stretch of Spring Street to accommodate the terrain park, which included a steep pile of snow and three rail features. It was built during an eight-hour span by employees from Shawnee Peak and the city, and included about 200 yards of snow collected from snowbanks and hauled to the site. Weather permitting, the city’s first WinterFest, sponsored by Portland’s Downtown District, continues Saturday in Monument Square with the Portland Pirates Hockey Shot, from 1-4 p.m., where participants will be able to go head to head with a Portland Pirates goalie. There will also be stickers, raffles, and other items, and a WinterFest Scavenger Hunt continues throughout the weekend. Details are online at portlandmaine.com.
