PORTLAND — Federal employees affected by the partial government shutdown can get city assistance at two locations.

City spokeswoman Jessica Grondin said the city and Wayside Food Programs will open mobile food pantries on Monday, Jan. 28, and Wednesday, Jan. 30.

The Jan. 28 food pantry will be open from 3-4 p.m. in Room 24 in the basement of City Hall, 389 Congress St. The second pantry will be open from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Portland International Jetport, 1001 Westbrook St.

Portland residency is not required to receive food, but clients must show their federal IDs.

The city’s Public Health Department SNAP-Ed program will also offer free “Pop-Up grocery store tours” for those who may want to apply for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits during the shutdown.

Grondin said the courses include a $10 gift card for Hannaford Bros. stores, a reusable grocery bag and recipe booklet.

The first class is at 4 p.m. Jan. 28 in City Hall Room 24. The second class begins at 10 a.m. Jan. 30 at the Jetport.

Grondin said the public is also invited to contribute items to the pantries, with toiletries, diapers and baby formula suggested as the items are not provided by Wayside. Food donations will also be accepted.

The donation sites are in the City Hall rotunda, the Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department at 212 Canco Road, the Spring Street Garage, and the Portland International Jetport’s administration offices.
