PORTLAND — The annual Homeless Persons’ Memorial Vigil will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, in the courtyard at the Preble Street Resource Center, at the corner of Preble and Portland streets.

The vigil precedes a march to Monument Square for a 4:15 p.m. commemoration ceremony, where candles will be lit to honor all from the homeless community who died this year.

Held each year for 23 years on the day of the winter solstice, the vigil is sponsored by the city Health and Human Services Department, Greater Portland Health, Maine Medical Center, Mercy Hospital, and Preble Street.
