SMCC teams win conference titles
The Southern Maine Community College baseball and softball teams both captured Yankee Small College Conference championships last weekend. The Seawolves baseball team hosted the tournament and after enjoying a bye into the championship game, defeated rival New Hampshire Technical Institute, 4-1, behind a three-hitter from Daniel French. Former South Portland High standout Brendan Horton was named the tournament’s Outstanding Offensive Player after going 2-for-3 and driving in a run. SMCC (22-20-1) hosts Bridgton Academy in a 3-game 302 Challenge Cup beginning Friday to end the season. Softball had to travel to NHTI, where it also won top honors. After beating Eastern Maine CC, 8-4, in the semifinals, the Seawolves eked out an 11-9 win over Central Maine CC in the final to finish the year 9-17.
Former Deering standout Maine Baseball Hall of Fame bound
Portland’s Tom Watson, a two-time all-league standout at Deering High School in 1969 and 1970, is one of nine men who will be inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame July 28 at the Holiday Inn By the Bay in Portland. Watson was a pitcher-outfielder for the Rams. St. Joseph’s College coach Will Sanborn is also among the inductees. FMI, 846-3460 or don@douglastitle.com.
Portland Bulldog Challenge upcoming
The inaugural Portland Bulldog Challenge, a 2.5-mile race through mud, water, obstacles and more mud, will be held May 18 at the Portland Arts and Technology High School, 196 Allen Ave. Run/crawl as an individual or as part of a four-person team to support scholarships and provide equipment, training and other athletic needs. Prizes will be awarded to top finishers and T-shirts will be given to those who register before April 30. FMI, portlandbulldogchallenge.com.
PAYSA holding skills program, tryouts
The Portland Area Youth Soccer Association is sponsoring a six-week Spring Skills n Scrimmage program on Sundays for children in the U-6 to U-8 age groups. Coaches from the Portland Phoenix club team will teach basic skills at Portland’s Presumscot School. Players receive a ball and jersey. The program begins May 12 and is $49. PAYSA is also holding fall travel team tryouts Sunday, May 5 at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. The program runs from mid-August through October and boys and girls U-10 through U-14 are eligible.
