PHS Football seeking Hall of Fame nominations

The Portland High football program is starting a Hall of Fame and is seeking nominations for its inaugural class. The public is encouraged to nominated players, coaches, contributors, etc., by Aug. 15. The inaugural class of five will be announced the night before the annual Portland-Deering Thanksgiving football game. Officials training course upcoming

The Western Maine Board of Soccer Officials is conducting their annual New Officials Training Course Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Gorham Municipal Center’s Recreation Department. The one-day clinic is followed by several on-field training sessions with seasoned officials. There is a small fee. Lunch and rulebooks are provided. The Board provides officials for all middle school, freshman, JV and varsity soccer in York and Cumberland counties. Local soccer players to compete in Special Olympics benefit game

Several recently graduated local soccer standouts will compete in the 23rd annual Special Olympics Maine benefit fundraiser Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Hannaford Field in Cape Elizabeth. The women’s game is at 6 p.m. The men play at 8 p.m. Aug. 8 (same times) is the rain date. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. The Southwestern Maine Activities Association men’s team includes Cheverus’ Andrew Rose, Deering’s Nathan Finberg and Portland’s Tim Rovnak and Chip Weber. Waynflete’s Peabo Knoth is playing for the Western Maine Conference squad, which holds an 11-4-7 all-time advantage. In the women’s game, the SMAA team includes Cheverus’ Darby Rawcliffe, Deering’s Samantha Sivovlos, McAuley’s Molly Miller and Delaney Regan and Portland’s Ashley Frank. McAuley’s Vince Aceto will be one of the coaches. The WMC team features Rhiannan Jackson of Class C champion Waynflete. Waynflete’s Todd Dominski will be a coach.
