Waynflete School cross country and track coach Brian “Ziggy” Gillespie has been named an inductee of the St. Joseph’s College 2013 Athletic Hall of Fame. Gillespie built the St. Joseph’s program into a New England Region powerhouse during his seven-years (1981-87) as head coach. The Monks won NAIA New England championships in 1981, 1982 and 1983. In 1987, St. Joe’s won the Maine state championship, as well an NCAA New England title. Gillespie was three times named New England Coach of the Year. He’s already been inducted into the Maine Running and Maine Baseball Halls of Fame.
Deering senior Eric Delmonte, a member of the Portland Porpoise Swim Club, recently verbally committed to Virginia Tech University. Delmonte is currently ranked 34th in the 200 breaststroke for 18-year-olds. He projects to swim the breakstroke and individual medley in college.
Southern Maine Community College recently announced its 2013 Athletics Hall of Fame class. The class includes Mike Brown and Kelly Maloney. Brown, Class of 2001, was a men’s basketball star, who made the Maine Small College Conference All-Star team twice. Brown is currently 10th in program annals in average assists per game and 16th in all-time steals. Maloney, Class of 2007, was a women’s soccer standout, who ranks as the program’s all-time leader in career goals.
“Both inductees had outstanding careers while at SMCC and have made significant contributions and had success upon leaving the college,” said SMCC athletic director and men’s basketball coach Matt Richards. “Induction into the Athletics Hall of Fame is very fitting for them as they exemplify what we hope our current student-athletes will strive to become.”
