Football semifinals set

The Cheverus and Portland football teams spent last week in unfamiliar fashion, on a bye, as the Eastern A playoffs began. The Bulldogs and Stags will return to action this weekend. Friday night, Portland, the No. 2 seed after a 7-1 regular season, will play host to third-ranked Windham (5-4, after its 54-14 quarterfinal round win over No. 6 Edward Little) Friday at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs beat visiting Windham, 57-14, Oct. 11. Cheverus, 8-0 and seeded first, will welcome No. 4 Bangor (5-4) Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The Rams downed No. 5 Lewiston, 55-21, in their quarterfinal Saturday. The Stags rolled at Bangor, 49-7, Oct. 19, then won at Deering in the finale, which proved to be longtime coach John Wolfgram’s 300th career victory. The Western A Final is Saturday, Nov. 16, on the field of the highest remaining seed. The Class A state game is Saturday, Nov. 23, at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
