Red Claws Christmas Tournament upcoming

The Portland Exposition Building will host the annual Red Claws Christmas basketball tournament later this week. On Thursday, the Falmouth and Scarborough girls play at 2:30 p.m., the Portland and Greely girls meet at 4, the Greely boys play a team from New Dorp, N.Y. at 5:30, Yarmouth’s boys play Susan Wagner, N.Y., at 7 and the Portland and Falmouth boys meet at 8:30. On Friday, games involving local schools begin at 9:30 a.m., when the Greely and Thornton Academy girls square off. McAuley faces Bedford, N.H. at 10:45 and Portland plays Falmouth at noon. In boys’ action, South Portland and Susan Wagner meet at 4 p.m., Deering and Gorham play in a countable contest at 5:30, Portland meets a team from Zagreb, Croatia at 7 and Falmouth and Bonny Eagle play at 8:30. On Saturday, the Yarmouth boys play Spruce Mountain at noon, Yarmouth’s boys meet New Dorp, N.Y., at 5:30 p.m., Scarborough and Windham play a countable game at 7 and Greely and Westbrook wrap up the tournament at 8:30.

McAuley alumnae game Thursday

McAuley will hold its fourth annual alumnae game Thursday at the high school. Warmups are at 4:30 p.m.. Pregame introductions will be held at 4:50 and the game starts at 5. Postgame pictures will be taken at 6, with a meet-and-greet to follow.

Running winter strength program upcoming

Maine Running Hall of Famer Brian “Ziggy” Gillespie, the cross country and track coach at Waynflete School, is holding an eight-week winter strength program for runners of all levels of ability from Jan. 8 through Feb. 26. Runners meet on Wednesdays at 6 p.m., at the Maine Running Company for easy 440s on the Portland Trails course and Saturdays at 8 a.m. at the Maine Running Company for a one-hour group run.
