Conway 3-on-3 Classic upcoming

The inaugural 3-on-3-for-B Conway Classic, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament to raise funds for the Brendan Conway Memorial Scholarship at Deering High School, in honor of the school’s former standout athlete, coach and athletic director, who passed away at the far-too-young age of 34 in November, will be held Saturday, March 8. Registration begins at 9 a.m., with games starting at 9:30. A fourth player can participate as an optional substitute. The cost is $75 for a three-person team and $100 for a four-person squad. The tournament is for players 18-and-older.  The scholarship fund seeks to honor Conway’s spirit, as well as his work within the Deering community. Each year, a deserving Deering senior will be awarded a sizable scholarship to help continue their education at a college or university. SMCC eliminated in conference tourney

Despite playing on their home floor, the Southern Maine Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams weren’t able to win a coveted Yankee Small College Conference title. The men’s team handled the University of Maine-Augusta, 89-71, in the quarterfinals, behind 25 points from standout Jose Nouchanthavong, on his birthday no less, but in the semifinals, the Seawolves fell to St. Joseph’s of Vermont, 79-65, to finish the season 21-9. Nouchanthavong bowed out with 17 points in the defeat. The women also won their quarterfinal, 63-58, over New Hampshire Technical Institute, behind 22 points from Danielle McCusker, 13 points and 14 rebounds from Nyaliep Deng and go-ahead free throws from Esther Palmieri. SMCC’s season then came to a close with a 75-67 loss to UMA. McCusker and Maria Veino both had 17 points as the Seawolves finished 19-8.
