Portland names new girls’ hoops coach

Portland High School athletic director Rob O’Leary announced Tuesday that Jay Lowery is the school’s new girls’ basketball coach. Lowery, a Deering High School graduate, replaces Jan Veinot, who stepped down after seven seasons. Lowery was Veinot’s assistant last winter after serving as the Yarmouth girls’ varsity coach for two seasons. Lowery led the Clippers to the Western B quarterfinals in 2012 and had a 10-28 overall record. Lowery was The Forecaster’s Northern edition girls’ team Coach of the Year in 2012.
“I’m excited for the opportunity,” Lowery said. “It’s a good fit for me. I grew up on Munjoy Hill. I’m really looking forward to the season. I hope we can pick right up where we left off and build on last year. It’s a good group of kids. We had good freshmen and sophomores last year and we have good returning juniors who had a lot of success last year. I’ll bring a lot of energy. We should be good.”
“We had some great candidates, but Jay was the perfect fit for us,” said O’Leary. “What really impressed me is that he really cares about the kids and the program. He helped out last year and the girls like him. He has high school varsity coaching experience. We won’t hold the fact that he’s a Deering grad against him.”
