Portland Babe Ruth team drops a pair at World Series

Portland’s Babe Ruth 14 All-Star team, the New England Region champion, lost its first two games at the World Series in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Portland lost its opener, 6-1, to White Hall, Arkansas, Saturday. Sunday, Portland fell again, 13-3, to Tri Valley, California. Portland had three more pool play games scheduled. The top three teams in each division advance to the finals, which begin Thursday. The championship game is Saturday.

Deering-Portland FH game dedicated to cancer awareness

When rivals Deering and Portland meet in their lone field hockey showdown this season, Monday, Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. at Deering High School, more than bragging rights will be at stake. The game will be dedicated to Deering supporter Shelly DiBiase and her family and to cancer awareness. All proceeds from the game, in addition to T-shirt and food sales, will go to cancer research.
