Local players named to SMAA hockey all-star teams

The SMAA boys’ and girls’ ice hockey all-star teams were finally released last week. The boys’ first team includes Portland senior forward Sam Guimond. Portland junior defenseman Scott Briggs and sophomore defenseman Bronson Guimond, along with Cheverus junior goalie Matt Roy made the second team. For the girls, Cheverus’ Alyssa Audet (junior forward), Maggie Grindatti (junior forward), Grace Fitzpatrick (junior defenseman) and Caitlin Pleau (junior defenseman), along with Portland freshman forward Rachael Allen, made the first team. Cheverus’ Saundrine Lanouette (junior goalie), Emily Sawchuck (sophomore forward) and Sage Witham (junior forward) made the second team. Deering junior Julie Pallozzi and Portland junior Ally Dolan were honorable mentions.  Cheverus’ Doug MacGillivray, Bethany Potter, Christine Renaud, Justin Sheehan and Melissa Slater, Deering’s Danielle Cusack and Portland’s Laura DiMillo, Priscilla Dimitre, K.R. Jurgelevich, Greg LeBorgne, Casey Monaghan, Sarah Newsome and Brian Watson qualified for the All-Academic team.

Women’s basketball league taking registration

The Hancock Lumber Women’s Summer Basketball League, hosted by Southern Maine Community college, is taking registration for the 2009 season. Games will be held Tuesday and Thursday nights from June 2 through July 9. Registration deadline is May 22. FMI, Becky Roak, rroak@smccme.edu.

Casco Bay Sports co-ed leagues beginning

Several spring co-ed leagues are starting up at Casco Bay Sports. Thursday basketball leagues start April 30. Softball begins Sunday, May 17. There will also be a dodgeball league beginning Tuesday, May 19.

First Annual Run or Walk for AIDS upcoming

The Frannie Peabody Center is holding a Beach and Bay 5K Run or Walk for AIDS Saturday, May 2 in Ogunquit, beginning at 11 a.m., and around Back Cove in Portland, starting at 12 p.m. The Portland race is USATF certified. Both races will be professionally timed. FMI, 838-4490 or peabodycenter.org.

Maine Waves hosting tryouts

The Maine Waves girls’ lacrosse club will be holding a tryout for its 2009 summer team Sunday, May 3 at 11 a.m., at the Preble St./Back Cove field in Portland. Training program for walkers begins

Sunday lacrosse clinics offered

Cheverus boys’ varsity lacrosse coach Deke Andrew and other top coaches from the area will be hosting weekly Sunday lacrosse clinics from June 7 through Aug. 9 at Deering High’s Memorial Field. The cost is $75 for five weeks or $150 for 10 weeks.  The program is a mix of instruction and game play and is open to boys and girls entering grades 2 through 8 next fall.
