Portland High announces fall practice schedule
Portland High School will start practice for the fall sports season on Monday, Aug. 17. Football practices from 8 to 11 a.m., at Quinn Field and 4 to 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Stadium. Field hockey will practice from 8 to 11 a.m. at Deering Oaks and 2 to 4 p.m. at Fitzy. Boys’ soccer goes from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Fitzy. Girls’ soccer practices from 8 to 10 a.m. at Fitzy and 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Preble. Boys’ cross country starts at 8:30 a.m. at Fitzy. Girls’ cross country starts at 9 a.m. at Fitzy. Golf begins with a meeting in the lower cafe at the high school at 9 a.m. Cheering goes from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fitzy. Freshman football begins Aug. 24. All athletes must have proper paperwork on file in the athletic office prior to participation. FMI, 874-8257.
SMCC announces coaching vacancies

SailMaine seeking coaches
Come join us at SailMaine this Fall to coach a group of talented high
school sailors on Casco Bay. We are looking for competent, professional
coaches to coach one of our high school teams. Teams practice together
three days a week from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. We are also looking for
assistant coaches. The season begins in mid-August and ends on Oct. 31.

SP boys’ basketball holding fundraiser
The South Portland boys’ basketball boosters are holding their second
annual fundraising golf tournament Monday, Aug. 24 at the Old Marsh
Country Club in Wells. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. The tournament
begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The cost is $100 per player,

Maine Elite Lacrosse final set
Atlantic Sportswear and Shay’s Grill Pub will square off in Thursday’s final of the Maine Elite Lacrosse summer league. Atlantic Sportswear advanced with a 13-11 semifinal round win over Siano’s Pizzeria, while Shay’s was a 9-2 victor over LaxPros.com. The title game starts at 7:30 p.m. at Deering High’s Memorial Field.
Maine Waves compete in New Jersey
The Maine Waves elite lacrosse team, featuring several players from The Forecaster’s coverage area, took part in the 2009 All Star Express Showcase July 16-19 in Marlton, N.J. The team finished with an overall record of 6-2-1, including wins over Virginia, Long Island, Central New York, Maryland, New Jersey and Minnesota, along with a record of 3-2-1 versus the highly competitive Galaxy Conference teams.
