Two Maine Sports Legends Hall of Honor inductees have Cheverus ties

Cheverus High varsity football coach and teacher John Wolfgram and former standout athlete and 1951 valedictorian Leroy Rand (posthumous) will be inducted into the Maine Sports Legends Hall of Honor Sunday in Waterville. Wolfgram coached Madison, Gardiner and South Portland’s football teams to a total of eight state titles and has this year’s Stags team 4-1 and in position for a second straight playoff berth. He also teaches history and English at Cheverus. Rand was a longtime teacher and successful coach at Cape Elizabeth High School. Also inducted Saturday will be Andy Palmer, Lynwood McHatten and Roger Shaw frrom northern Maine, Tony Hamlin from eastern Maine, Richard Whitmore and Noel “Spat” Roy from central Maine and Lucy Bogdanovich (a longtime field hockey coach at Deering High) and Ray Ciknell from southern Maine. Former New England Patriots coming to Portland for flag football game

Former New England Patriots standouts Ronnie Lippett and Roland James will compete with the New England Patriots Alumni Flag Football team and take part in a game against the Cumberland County Sheriff’s P.A.L. and ECMG Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. at Deering High’s Memorial Stadium. Proceeds from the game will benefit various youth athletic programs supported by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s P.A.L. A donation of $10 is suggested. FMI, alex@ecmgevents.com.

Golfing for a Cure fundraiser upcoming

WGME-13’s Dave Eid is hosting the first “Golfing for a Cure” tournament to benefit brain tumor research and treatment for the Noyes Brain Tumor Foundation, Monday at 8 a.m. at Sable Oaks Golf Course. Sailing regatta/fundraiser upcoming

SailMaine is hosting its second annual Leafer’s Last Leg regatta/SailMaine Soiree silent auction fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 17. Dozens of local high school sailors and seasoned sailing veterans will square off on courses outside Portland Harbor. BIW hockey team facing Montreal Canadiens alumni

The Bath Iron Works hockey team, IRONCLAD, will play the Montreal Canadiens alumni 2 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland in a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity.
