Local swimmers take part in meet

Portland Porpoise held its annual Candy Cane Meet earlier this month and 300 swimmers took part, many of whom achieved best times (earning candy canes as a reward). Jessica Russell of the Long Reach Swim Club set a new pool record in the 200 IM (2 minutes, 30.73 seconds). Russell also set a new pool record in the 100 freestyle (1:00.72). Eric Delmonte broke the 13-14 year old 100 breaststroke record (1:13.95).

SMCC drops hoops doubleheader to rival in 2009 finale

Tuesday night, Southern Maine Community College hosted rival Central Maine CC in a basketball doubleheader to wrap up the first semester. The women hung tough throughout, but fell 60-55, dropping to 5-5 overall (5-2 in the conference). Rachel Del Camp had 20 points and 13 rebounds. In the men’s game, CMCC outlasted the Seawolves, 109-105, despite 20 points and nine rebounds from Coleman Findlay. Josh Mackie and Mike Burchill both added 15. SMCC is 6-7 on the year (4-4 in conference). The men are now idle until Jan. 6 when they face Rochester. The women return to action Jan. 8 against Briarcliffe College.

SMCC hosting alumni basketball game

Southern Maine Community College is hosting a men’s basketball alumni game Sunday, Jan. 24 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., prior to the men’s varsity game against Holyoke C.C. at 1 p.m. FMI, 741-5927.
