Cheverus basketball coach selected to Maine Hall of Fame

Cheverus boys’ basketball coach Bob Brown, who led the Stags to the 2008 Class A state title and has them positioned for another run this winter, recently learned that he’s one of nine inductees into the 2010 Maine Sports Hall of Fame class. Brown has coached at the high school and college level for 50 years and has 550 wins to his credit.

“It’s a thrill,” Brown said. “I look at the people who are in there. It’s pretty obvious for athletes, those guys are so good. As a coach, it’s not as obvious. To be honest with you, it’s because of all the guys that I coached.”

The 35th annual ceremony will be held June 13 at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland. A social hour will precede the meal at noon. Tickets cost $35 and can be reserved by contacting Bill Daviero at 899-0569.

Tom Thornton, who won 11 varsity letters in four years at Cheverus, then went on to earn letters in football and basketball at Boston University, is also part of the 2010 class.
