Portland hockey team earns sportsmanshp award

For the second straight year, the Portland High boys’ ice hockey team won the Western Class A Coaches’ Sportsmanship award for Tier II. The Bulldogs went 9-10 this season and made it to the regional quarterfinals.

Former McAuley star to play in all-star classic

Scarborough’s Carolyn Freeman, a one-time McAuley standout, now at St. Joseph’s College, will take part in the 2010 New England Women’s Basketball Association Senior All-Star Classic on March 27. Freeman averaged 10.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game this winter. Freeman is the 19th player in school history to break the 1,000-point barrier.

Portland Porpoises holding open registration

Laxpros and North Yarmouth Academy are hosting a free boys’ youth lacrosse coaches’ clinic Saturday, March 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at NYA’s gymnasium. Casco Bay Sports is offering soccer, flag football, softball and dodgeball leagues this spring. A co-ed Monday night 6-on-6 soccer league starts April 12. A Thursday night league begins May 6. A Sunday 11-on-11 league begins May 2. A spring 6-on-6 flag football league starts April 11. A Sunday softball league begins May 2. A weeknight league commences May 3.
