Former Cheverus player earns Maine Baseball Hall of Fame nod

Kevin Joyce, a one-time all-conference catcher at Cheverus and later an all-conference selection at the University of Maine will be one of 13 new members inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in July. Joyce has served as a high school, college and professional umpire for the past 26 years. The induction ceremony will be held at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland on July 25. Sailing regatta upcoming

The Portland High School sailing team is hosting the second annual “Bulldog Classic” Regatta on Saturday at SailMaine Sailing Center in Portland. FMI, 650-7878.

SMCC honors top March athletes

Southern Maine Community COollege recently named Charlie Boettcher and Becca Roberts its Liberty Mutual March Athletes of the Month. Boettcher is a sophomore pitcher on the baseball team and is off to a 2-0 start. Boettcher is a captain and a Fire Science major. Roberts is a catcher for the softball team and is hitting .636 with four home runs and eight RBI. She is a Liberal Studies-Social Work concentration student.

Casco Bay Sports is offering soccer, flag football, softball and dodgeball leagues this spring. A co-ed Monday night 6-on-6 soccer league starts April 12. A Thursday night league begins May 6. A Sunday 11-on-11 league begins May 2. A spring 6-on-6 flag football league starts April 11. A Sunday softball league begins May 2. A weeknight league commences May 3. Waynflete lacrosse clinic upcoming

Longtime Waynflete varsity lacrosse coaches Cathie Connors and Bob Johnson will conduct clinics for boys and girls in grades 3-6 during the month of May. The clinics will emphasize fundamentals and prepare young athletes for competitive play. The first clinic is May 1 from 10 to 11:30 a.m., at the Fore River Fields.
