Portland rugby team wins again

The Portland boys’ U-19 rugby team, the “Power Pigs,” improved to 2-0 Saturday with a 34-7 win over Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire. Flanker Jack McDonald from Cape Elizabeth had two quick tries, each converted by flyhalf Francisco Marques of Greely. Marques and McDonald added single tries before the half to make it 24-0. In the second stanza, center Chase Rochon of Greely scored and lock Thorn Chhloeum of Scarborough closed out with a try on the game’s final play to account for the final score. Portland returns to action Saturday at 2:30 when it hosts Upper Valley, N.H., at Fox Street Field. For more on the team, visit powerpigrugby.org.

Cheverus alum honored in D3 baseball

Former Cheverus (Class of 2007) baseball standout Todd Keneborus, a junior at Saint Joseph’s College, was honored as the Division III National Player of the Week for the week covering April 5 through 11. Keneborus hit .682 with 12 runs, 13 RBI, three doubles, five triples and a home run. For the season, Keneborus leads the Monks with a .469 average and has 11 doubles, 10 triples and 49 RBI.

Cheverus student honored as scholar-athlete

Cheverus senior Liana Rubinoff is one of 10 graduating high school students who will earn a scholarship at the 35th annual Maine Sports Hall of Fame awards banquet on June 13 at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland. Cheverus boys’ basketball coach Bob Brown is among the inductees. Tickets are $35. FMI, 899-0569.

Waynflete lacrosse clinic upcoming

Longtime Waynflete varsity lacrosse coaches Cathie Connors and Bob Johnson will conduct clinics for boys and girls in grades 3-6 during the month of May. The clinics will emphasize fundamentals and prepare young athletes for competitive play. The first clinic is May 1 from 10 to 11:30 a.m., at the Fore River Fields. Baseball/softball program offered for children with disabilities

Challenger Division baseball/softball, for children with physical and/or mental disabilities or developmental delays, will meet Sundays from 2 to 3 p.m. The league is open for children ages 5 to 18 in the Greater Portland area.
