Cheverus, Portland students honored as scholar-athletes

Cheverus’ Charles Place and Portland’s Patrick Curran were named two of 17 recipients of the State of Maine Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Inc.’s, 23rd annual Scholar-Athlete awards. Curran owns a 95.6 average and is fifth in his class. He played offensive and defensive line for the Bulldogs and has been an honor roll student throughout his high school career. Curran has been an active volunteer with the Big Brother and “Play it Smart” programs and has been a team captain for the “Walk to Cure Diabetes.” Place has a 3.4 GPA and earned honor roll recognition all four years. He was a running back and defensive back for the Stags. Place is a member of the Key Club, Haitian Solidarity Club and Summit Leadership and was an SMAA All-Academic and First-Team All-Conference selection. Place also volunteers with youth sports and the Boys and Girls’ Club. Curran and Place will be honored Wednesday at 6 p.m., at Bowdoin College’s Thorne Hall. Tickets are $30. FMI, 729-4210.

Twilight Baseball League tryouts Sunday

The 2010 Twilight Baseball League, which includes teams in Auburn, Biddeford and Portland, will hold tryouts Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Frozen Ropes Training Center in Portland. Players who turn 19 by Aug. 1 or who spent the 2009-10 acadmic year in college or prep school are eligible. There is a $10 tryout fee. FMI, 878-2600 or leaguelineup.com/twilightbaseballleague.

SailMaine benefit upcoming

The Shakdown Regatta, featuring sailboats racing on courses inside Portland Harbor, will be held Saturday, June 5 as a benefit for SailMaine’s community sailing program. FMI, sailmaine.org.

Deering hosting boys’ basketball camp
