More all-stars named

In addition to the all-stars mentioned in last week’s edition, there were more names released in recent days. The boys’ soccer all-state team included Deering’s Charlie Dupee, Portland’s Fazal Nabi and Waynflete’s Tucker Geoffroy. Nabi was also named All-New England and Portland’s Rocky Frenzilli was given the Western Maine boys’ Coach of the Year award. The field hockey all-state team featured Cheverus’ Emily Sawchuck and Sarah LaQuerre, McAuley’s Sara Mercier and Portland’s Effie Drew. The Maine Track and Cross Country Coaches’ Association boys’ all-state team included Cheverus’ Jack Terwilliger as an honorable mention. The girls’ team boasted Cheverus’ Shannon Conley, Emily Durgin and Fiona Hendry as first teamers.

City Cup hockey fundraiser upcoming

The Deering and Portland High boys’ ice hockey teams will meet in the second annual “City Cup” regular season opener, Saturday at 7:30 p.m., at Portland Ice Arena, in what will serve as a fundraiser for the city’s middle school hockey program. McAuley hosting basketball alumnae game

The first annual McAuley girls’ basketball game will be held at the high school Monday, Dec. 27 at 5 p.m. There will be a reception afterwards. The game is for all alumnae. FMI, lfreeman@mcauleyhs.org.

SMCC hoops teams in coaches’ poll

The Southern Maine Community College men’s basketball team was fifth in the latest USCAA Division II coaches’ poll. The women were 23rd. In recent action, the men lost, 90-87, to New Hampshire Technical Institute. Josh Mackie had 19 points and Randall Laing 14. The women downed NHTI, 58-47, as Ariel LeDuc scored 13 points.
