Deering boys’ hoops, Portland girls’ hockey win sportsmanship award

The Deering boys’ basketball and Portland girls’ hockey teams were recently given Good Sportsmanship awards for Western Maine. Coach Dan LeGage and the Deering Rams received their award at Saturday’s Class A state championship basketball games in Augusta. Coach Courtney Rideout and the Portland Bulldogs received their award at the girls’ hockey state final last month in Lewiston.

Cheverus boys’ hockey ousted

The Cheverus boys’ hockey team’s first playoff game in four years resulted in a 6-2 loss at Marshwood/Traip last week. The Stags got goals from Nic Lops and Liam Fitzpatrick as they finished 10-9.

Locals compete at NE track championships

Portland’s Imadhi Zagon and Cheverus’ Jack Terwilliger posted solid results at last weekend’s indoor track New England meet in Boston. Zagon was fifth in the boys’ long jump (21 feet, 11.5 inches). Terwilliger placed eighth in the mile (4 minutes, 25.69 seconds).

SMCC hoops teams compete at Nationals

Southern Maine Community College’s men’s and women’s basketball teams both participated in the national tournament in Uniontown, Pa., last week. The men went 2-2 and wound up sixth. The Seawolves defeated PSU-Fayette, 84-73 (Coleman Findlay had 29 points) and Williamson, 66-63 (Findlay had 27 points and 13 rebounds), but lost to UC-Clermont, 109-76 and Berkeley (N.Y.), 100-74. Paul Holland won the 3-point shootout and Findlay became the all-time leading scorer in program history with 1,713 points, passing Greg Smith (Class of 1996). The women went 0-2, losing to Spalding, 94-38 (despite 18 points from Alisa Sweet) and also fell to PSU-Brandywine, 83-54 (Sweet had 19 points).

Running program upcoming

The Nor’Easter run training and racing program, under the direction of Maine Running Hall of Famer and current Waynflete School track coach Brian “Ziggy” Gillespie begins March and runs through Aug. 31. The program is open to male and female runners of any level of ability. Teams workouts are Wednesday evenings at World’s Gym, 265 Marginal Way, in Portland. FMI, happy2smiles2001@yahoo.com.
