Portland Babe Ruth team ousted at regionals

The Portland 14-year-old state champion Babe Ruth team’s stay at the New England regionals in Westfield, Mass., was a short one. Maine lost, 8-3, to Westfield in the opener, then fell, 12-2, to Manchester (N.H.) in a loser’s bracket contest and was eliminated.

Cheverus announces preseason first day schedule

The first day of preseason activities at Cheverus High School will be Aug. 15. Varsity and JV football practice from 8 to 10:15 a.m. and 3:45 to 6 p.m. Boys’ soccer has double session tryouts from 7 to 8:30 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Girls’ soccer tryouts are from 8 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. Field hockey goes from 8 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Boys’ cross country meets at 6:30 p.m. FMI, 774-6238.

Showcase League tryouts upcoming

The Showcase League, a wooden bat fall baseball league for high school level prospective college athletes, will be holding a tryout at Hadlock Field in Portland Sunday at 10 a.m. Play against the top talent in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont. 3-on-3 basketball tournament upcoming
